Co-WIN Facing OTP Issue; Some Users Report Unavailability of Slots: Co-WIN Rollout Update
According to many users online, the Co-WIN mobile app, which has only been launched for Android smartphones as of now, is not sending the OTP to users' mobile numbers in order to get registered for a vaccine.

The government of India today initiated the second phase of the COVID-19 vaccination process. Alongside the second phase of inoculation drive in the country for people above 60 years of age and those over 45 with co-morbidities, the COVID-19 vaccine registration platform Co-WIN also went live for eligible citizens earlier today. However, the government has clarified that the app available on Google Play Store is meant for administrators, while regular citizens will need to use the Co-WIN web portal (or Co-WIN 2.0) for registration. But it appears both the app and website are facing multiple glitches.

According to many users online, the Co-WIN mobile app, which has only been launched for Android smartphones as of now, is not sending the OTP to users’ mobile numbers during the first step of verification. Now, while the reason here may be that the app is not meant for regular citizens, it is unlikely since the verification step only requires a phone number before moving on to other vaccine registration details. We at News18 also tried to register ourselves via the Co-WIN Android app and did not receive any OTP, despite trying multiple times. Even the online portal encountered a glitch on the OTP verification step, as it did not go past the “enter mobile number” after sending us the OTP. We tried to access the web portal on different browsers and computers, but neither of them allowed us to go past the mobile number verification stage but kept sending OTPs at each attempt.

The Co-WIN Android app asks administrators to register themselves via a mobile number. After entering the mobile number, users are supposed to get an OTP to successfully register themselves as administrators on the app. Now, users are not being able to receive this OTP. We even tried the “forgot password” link on the Android app, in order to check if its an issue with just the registration page, but were not able to receive any OTP there as well. This means that the glitch pertains to the OTP verification, something that can be expected to be fixed soon.

The web version of Co-WIN, however, seems to be working fine for most, as some people using the web to register have said that they are not able to book slots in their region. Some even reported the website crashing, but that could have been due to the massive surge in traffic that followed PM Modi‘s photo of getting the COVID-19 jab himself at New Delhi’s AIIMS today morning.

The second phase of COVID-19 vaccination drive commenced today in India. During the second phase of the inoculation drive, people above the age of 60 nd people above the age of 45 with co-morbidities are getting vaccinated. The first phase of COVID-19 vaccine started with frontline healthcare worker receiving the vaccine in the country.
