One of the main concerns for many iPhone users, especially those using the ‘Pro’ lineup, has been the high costs associated with replacing or repairing their devices through Apple’s official channels. Recent iPhone models, including the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro, have been known for their challenging repairability, particularly regarding the back glass. However, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro models seem to represent a shift towards creating iPhones that are more repair-friendly instead of replacing the entire unit.
During the launch event, Apple highlighted that the iPhone 15 Pro models are “using an industry-first thermo-mechanical process,” and “the titanium bands encase a new substructure made from 100 percent recycled aluminum, bonding these two metals with incredible strength through solid-state diffusion.” Additionally, Apple said that the “aluminum frame helps with thermal dissipation and allows the back glass to be easily replaced.”
This change was reportedly first introduced with the iPhone 14 standard models, which feature a design allowing the phone to be opened from both the front and the back, as reported by MacRumors. Unfortunately, this redesign did not extend to the iPhone 14 Pro models.
Furthermore, the iPhone 15 Pro uses more durable materials, with a titanium frame replacing the stainless steel used in iPhones (iPhone XS, 11 Pro, 12 Pro, 13 Pro and 14 Pro) since the launch of iPhone X in 2017. However, it’s worth noting that iPhones still feature glass on both sides, making them susceptible to breakage.
While it’s unclear whether the new iPhones will be more durable compared to the iPhone 14 series considering they still offer the same Ceramic Shield glass, the improved repairability should make it easier and potentially more cost-effective for users to have their devices repaired. However, the exact repair costs that Apple may charge for iPhone 15 Pro repairs is still unclear.
