As another year has come to a close, Instagram users are indulged in sharing their most popular posts and stories from 2018. And if you think that is too mainstream, you can now create a mosaic out of the colors used in your Instagram photos.
Year of Colour is an interesting app that scans your Instagram feed and processes all of them into abstract colour dots. Now it might sound and look gimmicky, it is sort of like a time capsule, which also doubles as a data visualisation tool. This is exactly what Stef Lewandowski, creator of the app thought, “Maybe there’s a way of using some AI, some machine vision and bit of big data crunching — all those buzzwords — and apply it to something that’s quite human. This answers the question, how do I look on the internet if you just looked at it through the lens of the color palettes that you’re sharing.”
To use this tool, just head over to yearofcolour.com and connect your Instagram account. There is a lot of focus on security and privacy so you are limited to only your own account and cannot access information of your friend’s account.
Once you have logged in, it will ask you for a time frame. You can choose between this year, a month or a select time frame. Once you select that, the app goes through your most-liked Instagram posts and delivers a mosaic of sorts which will definitely appeal artists. Each image is basically reduced down to six and nine colors, creating a pattern of dots of different size based on the amount of color in an image, and how much likes it has got.
There is a bit of customisation available as well. For instance you can limit the number of dots based on popularity, or filter out the non-vibrant colors. You can also move the brightest dots to the center, or organise dots according to the chronological order. There is also a playthrough button where you can see how colors changed throughout the year on your Instagram feed.
