‘X’ Boss Elon Musk recently took legal action against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, the company behind ChatGPT, alleging a breach of contractual agreements established during his involvement in launching the ChatGPT project in 2015. Musk claimed that the company deviated from its initial mission of prioritising humanity’s benefit over profits. Lawyers representing Musk argued in the lawsuit that OpenAI’s pursuit of profit contradicts the founding principles of the AI startup. Interestingly, Musk himself was one of the architects of OpenAI in 2015 but parted ways with the board in 2018.
In a rather intriguing turn of events, Musk has proposed a unique resolution: he’s willing to drop the lawsuit if OpenAI rebrands itself as “‘ClosedAI”. This bold proposition was shared via a post on his platform X, where he stated, “Change your name to ClosedAI and I will drop the lawsuit.” He didn’t stop there. Musk continued his campaign against OpenAI with a touch of humour, editing a picture of Sam Altman sporting a guest ID Card, cleverly swapping the details to read “ClosedAI” alongside OpenAI’s logo. “Fixed it,” he wrote alongside the edited picture.

But that wasn’t the end of Musk’s antics. He even engaged in playful banter on his platform, featuring an animated image of a butterfly driving a car, with a police officer inspecting an ID that read ‘OpenAI’. The punchline? The butterfly, dubbed ‘ClosedAI’, dismisses it as an old photo. Musk’s message is crystal clear – he’s making his statement loud and clear through witty memes and visuals.

This development occurred alongside OpenAI’s release of private emails with Elon Musk in response to the lawsuit on March 6. In a blog post, OpenAI expressed disappointment at the escalation of the situation, particularly considering Musk’s previous influence and inspiration. They recalled Musk’s skepticism followed by the initiation of a competing venture and subsequent legal action as OpenAI made significant strides toward its mission.

In 2017, “we all understood we were going to need a lot more capital to succeed at our mission — billions of dollars per year, which was far more than any of us, especially Elon, thought we’d be able to raise as the non-profit,” they stated. According to the blog and emails, Musk proposed attaching the AI company “to Tesla as its cash cow.” However, negotiations soured when Musk allegedly withheld funding, leading OpenAI to reject his terms.
The co-founders of OpenAI, including Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman, and Wojciech Zaremba, reiterated their reluctance to concede absolute control to an individual, citing it as contradictory to their organisational principles.

“When he left in late February 2018, he told our team he was supportive of us finding our own path to raising billions of dollars,” OpenAI added.
