Internet Supports Man Who Asked His Mom Not To Kiss Baby Over Cold Sore Risk
The man explained that when he requested his mother not to kiss the child because she had a cold sore, she got upset and called him rude.

Parents don’t think much before protecting their babies from any harm and sometimes even ask family to keep their distance. However, a Reddit user recently shared a situation where he was called out by his mother for asking her not to kiss his baby. The individual explained that he requested his mother not to kiss the child because she had a cold sore, which could be harmful to the infant. Despite his concern, his mother reacted negatively, as she gave the baby back and got upset with his suggestion. The father stood by his decision and felt it was necessary to protect his child, but he’s been struggling with the guilt for offending his mother.

He explained, “Wife and I have a 3 month old baby. Recently my parents came to visit and my wife noticed my mother had a cold sore outside of her mouth. Wife told me to please remind her not to kiss the baby right now. I approached my mother who was carrying our baby. I advised her to ‘Not kiss the baby right now, please mom, it’s not good for them.’ My mom immediately handed me the baby and got visibly upset. She said ‘Oh okay then. Well here’s your baby.’ My father also got very mad at me to the point where they wanted to pick up everything and leave our house.”

The Reddit user mentioned that his parents called him “picky, inconsiderate and rude.” While he believed that he should have been more polite, he also felt that showing an article on the mouth infection might not have changed his parents’ attitude. He added, “They could’ve still called me crazy and told me I was overreacting. I wish this wasn’t real. At the end of the day, we knew we were in the right for speaking up but guilt trips are a real thing and it was bothering me.”

AITAH for telling my mom not to kiss my newborn while she had cold sores ? byu/Exciting-Stuff-7189 inAITAH

Social media users defended the Redditor and criticized his mother for her reaction. They argued that she should not be near the child at all, as cold sores could be a life threatening infection for a baby.

Reacting to the post, a user suggested, “Your child’s health is more important than your mom’s feelings.”

“Even without the cold sore, no one aside from the parents should be kissing a 3 month old. Your mom’s reaction is troubling. Be prepared for more of this kind of bulls**t from her,” a comment read.

Another asked, “Why she have to be told in the first place? Anybody stupid enough to kiss a baby with a cold sore should not be allowed anywhere near that baby.”

An individual explained, “Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus. They live in your body forever, there is no cure. Some people never have an outbreak, some people get them frequently. Someone who has the virus can spread it without knowing.”

One more added, “Your mother should not have been allowed under the same roof as a newborn while she had an active case of herpes on her lips. Why did you even allow this to happen? Your mother should have been on antivirals before and during her visit.”

Since the post was shared on Reddit, it has garnered over 11,000 views.
