Jane’s Addiction concert in Boston took an unexpected turn when frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro clashed on the stage, leading to a dramatic and abrupt end of the night. During the performance of Ocean Size, the 11th number in a set that usually stretches out to 14 or 15 songs, tensions between the two band members escalated, leading to Farrell physically confronting Navarro. The incident, captured on video, shows Farrell aggressively charging at Navarro, pushing him forcefully and punching him. Navarro responded by placing his hands on Farrell’s chest in order to defend himself. The footage also shows Farrell shouting at Navarro, prompting security to step in and separate the two, preventing further escalation.
Following the incident’s spread on social media, Farrell’s wife Etty Lau took to her Instagram to address the altercation. She explained the friction between the two members had been building up due to ongoing issues with the stage volume. Lau noted Farrell had been struggling with tinnitus and a sore throat, which he felt became worse by the loud sound levels drowning out his voice. She explained that this frustration erupted during the performance.
“But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it,” she wrote.
“Dave still looked handsome and cool in the middle of a fight. Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour – he finally did not calm down, but did breakdown and cried and cried. Eric, well he either didn’t understand what descalation meant or took advantage of the situation and got in a few cheap shots on Perry,” she further noted.
