Cricket is not just a sport in India. The impact and popularity of the game are such that the Indian film industry even could not remain far away from the game. According to many, the 2001 movie Lagaan is one of the finest Bollywood films to be ever made based on cricket. This period drama, set during the colonial British rule in India, was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2002 Academy Awards.
Even after more than two decades since its release, Lagaan remains one of the most adored cricket-based films. Recently, an AI artist created some images that placed Indian men’s cricket team players against the backdrop of Lagaan. He also added Virat Kohli’s wife, actress Anushka Sharma.
These AI and photoshop generated images were titled, “Lagaan Reimagined!” The artist, Sahid SK, added a disclaimer in the caption that read, “The following images are created through artificial intelligence for experimental and entertainment purposes. We wish to emphasise that these images are entirely fictional, and no intention exists to defame, harm, or malign any public figure or belief.”
The post has managed to grab the undivided attention of users on social media.
A person said, “After seeing this, I am feeling like watching Lagaan once again.”
Another wrote, “Jadeja, Shubman, Hardik and Bumrah fit so well in the images.”
A few declared that the AI transformation is “just amazing.”
This is not the first time that Sahid SK has made Indian cricketers as the subjects of his AI work.
In April last year, he created a series of photos that showed famous cricketers like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and others as old men.
He made these “aged” portraits using Mid Journey, a prompt-based AI art tool. Commenting on it, a user said, “Sachin Tendulkar is made from the picture of George Bush. 100000%.”
Another added, “LOL, Sachin is looking like Morgan Freeman.”
“Ravindra Jadeja looks like Ashish Vidyarthi,” read a comment.
Meanwhile, team India are currently playing in the 2024 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by West Indies and the USA. India have so far been unbeaten in the competition and the Rohit Sharma-led side has qualified for the Super 8.
