This 1,000-year-old UK Castle On Sale For Just Rs 4 Crore
The castle, dating back 956 years, occupies a substantial 29.84-acre parcel of land and has been hailed as one of the UK's most notable ruins by English Heritage.

Property buyers have the opportunity to acquire a 1,000-year-old castle for a price lower than that of a typical house in London, as £50,000 (around Rs 44 lakh) has been cut from its original asking price of £500,000 (Rs 4.4 crore). Located in Herefordshire, Historic Wigmore Castle is now listed at £450,000 (Rs 4 crore) after failing to garner interest over the past six months.

The fortress, dating back 956 years, occupies a substantial 29.84-acre parcel of land and has been hailed as one of the UK’s most notable ruins by English Heritage. In addition to the Grade I-listed castle, purchasers will receive extensive grounds, featuring a moat, woodland and jousting field. The property also includes planning permission to transform a barn workshop on-site into a two-bedroom dwelling, accessible via a private driveway.

Nevertheless, there is a catch to the sale: the grounds must remain accessible to the public, as English Heritage retains a right of way for a path leading to the castle. According to the law, any property under the guardianship of the Secretary of State must be open to the public, granting them access to the grounds.

English Heritage states that purchasing the site would still be an investment in something extraordinary. Established in 1067 by William Fitz Osbern, the Earl of Hereford and a confidant of William the Conqueror, the castle boasts a rich historical legacy, having hosted numerous kings and queens. Situated amidst the picturesque Herefordshire landscape, it showcases the remnants of several turrets and essential walls. Although much of the castle site is now overgrown, its grounds have evolved into a habitat for various rare plants and wildlife species.

A representative from Sunderland estate agents remarked, “This presents a one-of-a-kind and exceptional chance to obtain the esteemed Grade I Listed Wigmore Castle and its accompanying grounds, complete with planning permission to transform an existing workshop into a two-bedroom residence. With a storied past, the castle served as a significant seat of authority for more than 500 years, welcoming numerous monarchs throughout its history.”
