As CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his wicket shy of a century made in the first innings, the fan’s unusual announcement left many stunned.

Former Indian Cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s craze among fans knows no bounds. Despite retiring from international cricket, his fandom remains unmatched. The love for ‘Thala’ makes fans do extraordinary things and here is the proof. During the live broadcast of Chennai Super Kings’ IPL fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday at MA Chidambaram Stadium, an unusual declaration caught everyone’s attention. A fan of the cricketer broke up with his girlfriend and the reason has everything to do with MS Dhoni.

As CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his wicket, the fan’s announcement left many in splits and stunned at the same time. Post Gaikwad’s wicket, MS Dhoni made it to the ground. Upon his entry, the camera panned to the fan with a placard in his hand. The placard read, “Broke up with my GF bcz her name doesn’t have 7 letters.” He referred to Dhoni’s jersey number 7, making it a ground for a breakup with his girlfriend.

The fan’s placard prompted a flurry of reactions from the users online. A fan remarked, “Lol. MSD has a separate fan base.” Another chimed in, “Dhoni and his fans are coolest.” An individual commented on the post, “Dhoni and his fans are coolest.”

The recent viral post can be linked with the ‘Thala for a reason’ trend which made waves online last year following India’s loss to Australia in the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Final. The trend involves fans associating the number 7 with various concepts.

Besides the fans, several brands also jumped onto the bandwagon to participate in the trend. To reach the count of 7, Blinkit previously shared a post. It read, “Blinkit has 7 letters, the message is clear. Thala for a reason.”

Swiggy, hopping on the trend, relied on going for some foodie wordplay. Instead of ‘thala’, the brand posted about thali and wrote, “Thali for a reason.”

MS Dhoni has played several innings across nine matches this season and scored 96 runs at a strike rate of 259.46.
