It is not uncommon for builders to convert luxurious homes into some other type of functioning building like a prison or hospital. However, this luxurious residence in England had things done the other way around as it was converted into a comfy home from a prison, back in the nineteenth century.
No one could expect a luxurious home to be an old prison. But unsurprisingly, the builders did an amazing job of converting it into a place for living that one would not be able to tell it used to be a prison unless they are aware of its history. This former prison known as Octagon House is located in Beverley, East Yorkshire, England, and was turned into a home in 1880. Because of its octagonal shape, the house is given that fitting name and is one of the only three octagon-shaped houses in England.
Originally made a prison for the town, it was opened in 1810 and housed around 100 inmates. Later, it was bought by a builder who made it into a lovely family home, housing agents saying it “epitomises the pinnacle of refined living”. This house consists of three grand reception rooms, six bedrooms, a garden room and three bathrooms, along with a basement, which is being touted as one of its best features.
The basement alone is installed with a home bar, a cinematic room, a games room and even a walk-in store, making it a desirable place for those who love hosting. Praising the residence, the agent stated, “Whether hosting soirées with esteemed guests or relishing cherished moments with loved ones, this extraordinary space promises endless hours of delight and camaraderie.”
The agent further revealed that the place was renovated recently by the current owners, who made sure to cover all the corners of this gorgeous settlement. The house is priced at 1.5 million pounds (Rs 15.75 crore) and can be easily spotted by visitors as it boasts a unique octagonal shape. Made around 215 years ago, the place is now free of any remnants of a prison.
