Scarborough City in North Yorkshire is one of the most dangerous medium-sized towns in the county of North Yorkshire in England. Despite the rise in crime, the seaside town of Scarborough still attracts crowds as it is the second most-visited destination in England by British holidaymakers. Due to dangers looming in the dark in this city, the locals and tourists prefer to avoid going out at night. According to a report, the crime rate in Scarborough is 34 percent higher than in Yorkshire and Humber. Not only this, it is 80 percent higher than the combined figures for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Local police claim that they are doing everything possible to deal with crime in the city centre, including banning drinking alcohol on the streets.

The probable reasons for the rising crime include drinking, begging and homelessness. 37-year-old Louis Stringer, who works at Mick Grime Shellfish, a seafood restaurant on the seashore, lives in the city with his wife and child. He said in an interview that he never allows his family to go to the city centre at night. According to Louis, Scarborough used to be a good, prosperous city, but now the crime rate has increased. Finding stranded strangers at night, the criminals tend to rob them and sometimes kill them with knives.

Business owner Jonathan Thompson said in an interview that Scarborough is at the far end of the UK and attracts a lot of people. But people tend to get into a bad situation in the town. The whole town is not bad, added Jonathan Thompson. “There is a lot of drinking in the centre of the town which leads to crime, but the rest of Scarborough is pretty good,” said Jonathan Thompson.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “The police work closely with North Yorkshire Council to tackle crime and disorder in Scarborough and make it a safe place for residents, businesses and tourists. This may be responsible for the crime reduction.”

The overall crime rate in Scarborough in 2023 was 152 crimes per 1,000 people. In January 2024, Scarborough was the worst medium-sized town in North Yorkshire for anti-social behaviour, with 140 crimes reported and a crime rate of 2.9 per 1,000 daytime population.
