Industrialist Anand Mahindra has shown a big thumbs-up to two talented youngsters, who have transformed a recliner sofa into a transportation system. Mahindra, who shares a massive follower base on social media, shared a clip of the drivable sofa on X (formerly Twitter). From purchasing a basic recliner sofa from an online store to configuring it with a motor and wheels, the entire procedure of the DIY experiment was documented in the video.
Though the duo designed the moving sofa just for fun, they certainly deserve much credit for their passion and dedication towards automobile engineering. Mahindra feels a country needs more ardent individuals like them to become a behemoth in the auto industry.
Just a fun project? Yes, but look at the passion and engineering effort that went into it. If a country has to become a giant in automobiles, it needs many such ‘garage’ inventors…Happy driving kids, and I’d like to see the look on the face of the RTO inspector in India, when… pic.twitter.com/sOLXCpebTU— anand mahindra (@anandmahindra) December 30, 2023
The billionaire wrote in the caption of the post, “Just a fun project? Yes, but look at the passion and engineering effort that went into it. If a country has to become a giant in automobiles, it needs many such ‘garage’ inventors. Happy driving kids, and I’d like to see the look on the face of the RTO inspector in India when you drive in to register this.”
As revealed in the video, the concept of the motorised sofa is the brainchild of a guy named Mekdev, who used 3D modelling to prepare the design. He then bought a generic sofa from IKEA and made some modifications to it with his engineering skills. It gets the power from a Briggs & Stratton 9 hm engine, which is mounted in an axle. The other items used in the model were mostly self-fabricated. The sofa can easily be controlled by a remote.
Anand Mahindra’s post was able to catch the attention of many users, who praised the efforts and creativity of the inventors. Since being shared on X, the video has received more than 2,40,000 views while garnering over 5,000 likes.
One of the viewers was quick to acknowledge, “This is an interesting innovation.”

Another user believes this sort of innovation will help in reducing carbon footprints. “I used to imagine some such magic carpet but this sofa car is too grounded,” she added in the comment.
One individual can’t wait to see this technology in India.
I would love to experience this in India. Ab dekhna ye hai ki kaun banata hai pehle aisa kuch. Mahindra wala ya Tata wala.
