You may have seen breathtaking cascading waterfalls from hills and mountains. People often visit these stunning places to beat the scorching heat, listen to the roaring noise of the waterfalls and witness the rainbows. What if we tell you that there is a certain kind of waterfall, right in the midst of a desert that will leave you in awe of nature’s surprises? A video of this has gone viral on the internet which shows a unique kind of waterfall. This rare kind of ‘sand waterfall’ has stirred curiosity among internet users. Many are definitely surprised to witness such a phenomenon, others debated about the term and the omission of water, due to the lack of it and calling it just ‘sand fall’.
The clip begins with a man pointing towards what looks like a huge sinkhole in the middle of a desert. Just like water cascades down the hill, the sand can be seen mimicking that behaviour and creating an illusion of sand fall. While waterfalls attract tourists to take a bath under it, this is a total no-no and will bury you alive. The caption of the clip read, “Desert Miracle! Witness the mesmerising ‘sand waterfall’ – where sand flows like water down a hill. Nature never ceases to amaze!”
But what exactly is a sand waterfall?
Well, the caption explained that a sand waterfall occurs when sand cascades down a slope, which creates an illusion of a waterfall. This phenomenon is typical in arid and desert environments, where the wind and gravity come into play to cause the loosening of the sand and flow down the steep hillsides or dunes. This has been commonly observed in Africa’s Namib Desert, the Arabian Desert and some parts of the American Southwest. As stunning as it may look, it also highlights the ever-changing landscape of the desert.
The video has more than 2 lakh views on Instagram. A user wrote, “I saw a sandfall underwater while scuba diving off of Cabo San Lucas. Super cool.” One pointed out, “Sand waterfall is a mixture of sand and water falling right..? All I see on the video is only sandfall.” Another chimed in and said, “Sand fall. Where’s the water?” One more wrote, “Its my first time to see it..thanks.”
