Cyril Almeida, the Pakistani journalist in the centre of a storm after the government placed him on the Exit Control List, tweeted that every immigration officer in the country had his name plastered on his desk.

In response, the newspaper issued a note stating that it stood by the story, which had been “verified, cross-checked and fact-checked”. Pakistani journalists and politicians took to social media to express their support for the beleaguered journalist, making #CyrilAlmeida one of the top trends on Twitter in Pakistan. The other hashtag that is trending is #StandWithCyril
