London: An abandoned Shar-Pei puppy in the UK has had a facelift to save his sight after his natural skin folds over-developed - almost completely covering his eyes and ears.
Benny, the seven-month-old Shar-Pei, was discovered wandering the streets three weeks ago.
He had been left almost blind and deaf after his natural skin folds almost completely covered his eyes and ears. He needed surgery to cut away a lot of the excess skin on his face and head in order to save his sight and hearing.
Staff at Margaret Green Animal Rescue in Dorset launched an appeal to fund the urgent surgery he required and donations came flooding in.
Benny had his first surgery last week and is set to undergo his second, 'mirror.co.uk' reported.
"When Benny was brought to us by the dog warden we had no way of knowing just how much he was suffering with various health conditions," Hannah Dunn, senior animal welfare worker at the centre, said.
"Benny's problems meant that he was almost blind and his quality of life would be seriously compromised.
"He had his first operation last Thursday which was a facelift and double entropian – removing skin folded in on his eyes," Dunn said.
"After he has recovered from this major surgery, Benny will have a double ear operation and after this he may well need a third operation," Dunn added.
Benny is also suffering from double entropian, a condition where his eyelids fold inwards causing irritation as his eyelashes rub against his eyes.
This is so severe in Benny's case that one eye has developed a possible ulcer.
Benny's ears are also affected and both have severe infections which resulted in the narrowing of the ear canals.
