Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Terminal 2 (T2) is set to redefine the travel experience with an innovative and first-of-its-kind security process.
Soon, passengers traversing through T2 can bid farewell to the hassle of removing personal electronic devices like mobile phones, laptops, watches, and chargers from their handbags during security checks before boarding.
According to a recent Money Control report, the trial run of the CTX machines is currently underway and will initially roll out exclusively at domestic gates, promising a seamless and efficient security experience.
These advanced CTX machines will be seamlessly integrated with the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), eliminating the need for passengers to place their electronic gadgets in separate trays during security checks. Security officials will now be able to inspect all contents through the CTX machines, which offer the unique ability to rotate views and examine bag contents, significantly reducing the necessity for re-checks and physical inspections.
The new system not only allows passengers to keep electronic items and LAGs (liquids, aerosols, and gels) in their bags but also streamlines the screening process, leading to quicker processing times at security checkpoints. This groundbreaking initiative aims to expedite the divesting process, minimize contact points, and elevate hygiene standards for travelers.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has mandated that all major airports handling 50 lakh passengers install 3D CTX machines for cabin checks by the end of the year, underscoring the significance of this technological leap in aviation security.
Terminal 2, aptly named the ‘terminal in a garden,’ was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022. Since its domestic operations commenced on January 15, 2023, and international flight operations on September 12, Terminal 2 has been a symbol of excellence in air travel.
While Terminal 1 (T1) caters to domestic flights, Terminal 2 exclusively serves international carriers and hosts domestic flights for AirAsia, Air India, Star Air, and Vistara. The first phase of Terminal 2’s construction, with an estimated cost of Rs 13,000 crores, covers a built-up area of around 2.5 lakh square meters, with an additional 4.41 lakh square meters planned for the second phase.
