Chandigarh: The Punjab government on Wednesday said that it has decided to slash the cess levied on the purchase of basmati from 0.25 to 0.10 per cent. The money collected through this cess is meant for cancer and drug de-addiction treatment (CADA) fund.
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal took the decision in a meeting with a delegation of Punjab Rice Millers and Exporters Association, an official spokesman said.
The Association said that in case during a particular season the total amount of cess levied on the purchase of basmati falls short of the minimum annual contribution of Rs 50 crore, then the deficit so caused would be voluntarily borne by it.
