The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) announced guidelines for institutions to run Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Master of Technology (MTech), engineering diploma, and management courses for working professionals for the 2024–25 academic year. As per the new guidelines, institutions with more than 80 per cent average enrollment over the previous three years are qualified to begin the course. Institutions can launch up to three courses, and they can only conduct them if one-third of the students enrol in each.
As per the guidelines, according to the most recent list of aspirational districts by the central policy think tank NITI Aayog, institutions in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, as well as states in the northeast area, can apply to start courses for working professionals. The AICTE has also lifted the distance limit, stating that professionals living within a 75-kilometre radius are eligible for admission. Previously, the restriction was 50 km. Candidates should have at least one year of full-time or regular job experience.
ICTE member secretary, Rajive Kumar told Careers 360, “Now we have only two modes of education: one is face-to-face regular mode and the second is Online Distance Learning (ODL) mode. The concept is to help the working professionals to enhance their qualification, we introduced this concept last year only. This year, in the coming 2024-25, we have opened for all institutions.”
The number of seats in the UG and PG programmes are as follows-
Engineering Degree- UG-60, PG- 30
Engineering Diploma- UG-30, PG- 15
Management- UG-30, PG-60
Computer Applications- UG-30, PG- 60
Design- UG- 20, PG- 10
Applied Arts and Crafts- UG-30, PG-15
Planning- UG-60, PG-30
Hotel Management and Catering Technology- UG-60, PG-30
The syllabus for working professionals will be the same as for normal students, and examination patterns will be uniform across institutions. Working professionals will be able to transfer up to 40% of their credits through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) or the SWAYAM platform.
The institutions must adhere to the state or union territory’s reservation policy, if applicable. In the absence of such a policy, the institute may create its own procedure for shortlisting eligible students based on their performance in the qualifying exam and in collaboration with the applicable state’s admission or counselling body. However, one seat in each institute shall be reserved for candidates employed by the central government and its agencies. In the absence of such applicants, the vacant seat may be assigned to the general category.
