Sheikh Hasina, the country’s Prime Minister has resigned and fled from Bangladesh and is expected to reportedly stay in India for the next few days. This situation has occurred due to the massive student protests calling for an end to the government’s quota system. Hasina had started her career as a student leader in college politics only. Educational Qualifications

Sheikh Hasina attended primary school in her village of Tungipara. When her family moved to Dhaka, she attended the Azimpur Girls School and Begum Badrnnesa Girls College. She enrolled for a bachelor’s degree at Eden College. The 76-year-old politician was elected as the Vice President of the Students Union in Eden College between 1966 and 1967. Sheikh Hasina also became involved in the politics of the Students League or the Bangladesh Chhatra League. She was also elected as the general secretary of the women’s unit in Rokeya Hall.

Sheikh Hasina’s command of languages

Sheikh Hasina is proficient in three languages, i.e.- Bengali, English and Hindi. The veteran politician has also studied Bengali literature at Dhaka University. She earned her bachelor’s degree from this university in 1973.

Sheikh Hasina’s birth

Sheikh Hasina was born on 28 September 1947 to the Bengali Muslim Sheikh family of Tungipara of East Bengal. She is the daughter of the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of an independent Bangladesh. He was the principal orchestrator of Bangladesh’s separation from Pakistan in 1971. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with Hasina’s mother and three brothers were assassinated on August 15, 1975.

No clarity about the Asylum

As of now, it has been 24 hours after Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka and landed at Delhi’s Hindon base. It is still unclear where her final destination will be, as The Hindu confirmed that the United Kingdom is unlikely to accept her request for asylum. The report states that she is discussing options with other countries like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, apart from those where her immediate family resides: the US, UK, Finland and India.
