Tara Sutaria shot to fame even before she marked her acting debut with Karan Johar’s Student Of The Year 2. Trained in western classical vocal music, she has been singing since the age of seven. By the time she became a film actor, she had already performed in musical productions and proved her mettle as an opera singer in concerts in India and internationally. She also lent her voice to films and commercials.
Recently, Tara took to social media to share a throwback video of her performing an opera piece with The Bombay Chamber Orchestra at the reopening of Liberty Cinema in Mumbai in 2016. In the video, she’s seen singing the second verse of Ave Maria, a Latin song, which instantly grabbed the attention of her fans and peers.
To mark the occasion of World Music Day, News18 Showsha exclusively catches up with Tara, who opens up on her love for live singing and harbouring the dream of taking to the stage again. She tells us, “I’m going to do that, one hundred percent. I made a promise to myself earlier this year as part of my New Year resolution that I’ve to get back to music because if I don’t, I would feel very, very sad.”
The prep for the same has already begun and if everything goes as per plan, Mumbaikars will very soon get to witness her perform live on stage. “I’ve actually begun the process of having my own concerts again and I’m in touch with all of these amazing musicians from all over the country to have my first concert after so many years. I’m so excited about it. I’ve received wonderful feedback. It’s going to be a really big one,” she reveals.
Looking back at her concert at Liberty Cinema and The Royal Opera House, Tara says, “Just before my debut, I had hosted a couple of solo concerts because I knew that I would be getting a little bit busier in the film space. One of them was at the reopening of very iconic Liberty Cinema and the other was at the reopening of Royal Opera House in South Bombay. Prior to that, I did many shows at NCP and other amazing places in the city that I really miss performing at.”
The Apoorva actor adds, “I remember getting standing ovations at Liberty Cinema and The Royal Opera House for two-three minutes. It was such an emotional moment for me because I also knew that this is something I wouldn’t be doing for a little while considering how busy one gets in our industry.”
In March this year, Tara piqued the curiosity of many when she shared a post of herself singing in New York and expressed her love for Broadway ballads and ‘old school tune’. Talking about it, she shares, “I went to New York to shoot for an ad campaign. Whenever my sister and I travel, we make it a point to watch a lot of musicals and plays. After one of the musicals, I went to this really famous place in New York where all of the stage performers from musicals go to sing after their shows. I hadn’t sung in a really long time but a lot of our friends told me to go up on stage and sing with the gentleman who was playing the piano.”
It was, in fact, this episode that nudged her to return to her passion once again. “I sang a song from a really famous musical, the Indian version of which I had been a part of for a couple of years when I was a teenager. I received incredible applause and people were so happy when I sang. It made me feel so valued as a singer again. And that really opened my eyes and made me realise that music is something I really need to get back to,” says Tara, who crooned Shaamat and Galliyaan Returns in Ek Villain Returns.
