Manchester United are reportedly plotting to bring Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox on board. Days after swooping in Manchester City’s Chief Football Operations Officer Omar Berrada, Manchester United are now looking to appoint Wilcox as a key figure in the new sporting hierarchy at Old Trafford as per The Athletic.
According to the report, Manchester United still have not approached Wilcox for the role but the latter is well aware of the Red Devils interest in him. Wilcox and Newcastle United’s Sporting Director Dan Ashworth are both currently under the radar of Sir Jim Ratcliffe who looks to revamp the club’s administration to pave the way for a new era.
Wilcox had resigned from his position as Academy Director at Manchester City last year before moving to Southampton. Manchester City were quite keen on making him stay by providing a new offer but Wilcox decided to end his nine-year stay at the Etihad Stadium. He was a key member at the club and under him, talents like Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, Oscar Bobb and even Chelsea’s Cole Palmer were all developed in the academy. Wilcox began his role as academy director in 2017 before which he worked as a U-18s head coach. In his career as a player, Wilcox won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers. He also represented teams like Leeds United and Blackpool and then finally hung up his boots in 2006.
Manchester United recently appointed Berrada as the club’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The decision is believed to have been spearheaded by none other than Sir Jim Ratcliffe who continues to reshape the club’s hierarchy.
Manchester United have also experienced an on-field resurgence in 2024 as they are yet to lose a game this year. Manchester United won their FA Cup round four game against Newport County 4-2 last month before picking up three successive wins in the Premier League against Wolves, West Ham and Aston Villa.
They are next set to face Luton Town this weekend at the Kenilworth Road in the Premier League. Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag will be looking to maintain this brilliant run in form as they eye another victory.
