Manchester: Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo escaped unhurt on Thursday after his sportscar hit a roadside barrier. "No one was injured in the collision," Great Manchester Police said in a statement after the Portugal international's Ferrari crashed in a tunnel near Manchester airport.

Ronaldo, who helped United win the Premier League and Champions League titles last year, won the 2008 Ballon d'Or. Soccer - Manager Mark Hughes said on Thursday that Manchester City had had an improved bid for Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz rejected.

Hughes, who signed the Paraguay international when he was Rovers boss last season, told the club's website : "We made a bid in the region of 12 million pounds ($18.07 million) in the summer and it is significantly higher than that ... but he is Blackburn's player and they don't want to deal at the level we have made a bid at."

Soccer - Manchester United have signed Belgian defender Ritchie De Laet on loan from Stoke City for the rest of the season, the Premier League club said on Thursday. The 20 year-old, who has not featured for Stoke in the Premier League, will play for the reserve team.

Athletics - British sprinter Dwain Chambers said he planned to run in the world athletics championships in Berlin in August and could take part in the 4x100 metres relay. Chambers, 30, who served a two-year doping ban from 2003, was Europe's fastest performer over 100 metres last season but was banned from the Beijing Olympics by the British Olympic Association's bylaw banning doping offenders for life.

"I am keen to run the relay for the Great Britain team this summer," Chambers told British newspapers.
