CHENNAI: Reminding her party workers about her vision for a national role for the AIADMK, party general secretary and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday exhorted them to work to attain the “matchless gift” of all the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the 2014 elections.In an appeal to the AIADMK cadre, Jayalalithaa reminded the workers of the national role awaiting the party. “Emerging victorious in all the 40 seats in the Lok Sabha polls alone would be the matchless gift you could give me. Start work in right earnest to reap the fruits of victory,” said Jayalalithaa, whose birthday falls on February 24.In January, on the eve of M G Ramachandran’s birth anniversary, she asked the partymen to prepare for that big day when her party would become a decisive force in the national politics. In the AIADMK general council in December last too, she made the point. Recalling that her mentor and former chief minister MGR never celebrated his birthday nor met anyone on the day, Jayalalithaa told the cadre that she was only too happy to follow in his footsteps.“Please do not try to meet me on my birthday,” she said, adding that party cadre could instead help the poor to the extent possible.“Avoid extravaganza and grandeur. If you could help the needy, it would make the beneficiaries happy and encourage me even more,” the CM said. Reminding the party workers that pomp and show exhibited by the previous DMK regime was among the reasons that led to its fall, she informed that the AIADMK government never wasted even a little bit of the tax payers’ money.“In these nine months of AIADMK rule, no extravagant function was held. Projects were inaugurated through video-conferencing. Taking cue from this, you should observe my birthday as an occasion to support the indigent,” she appealed.
