BANGALORE: The city police have decided to set up more than 4,000 police chowkies to make city dwellers feel safer. City Police Commissioner B G Jyothiprakash Mirji has asked all police inspectors to identify places to establish chowkies in their respective station limits. Some inspectors have already identified the places. The first few chowkies are expected to become operational within a month.Mirji told Express that after chowkies were set up, people would not need to go to police stations for small issues. Also, he said the number of anti-social activities would automatically come down near chowkies. With 4,000 chowkies across the city, he said the police were expecting a great change. The chowkies will be set up mostly at places where incidents such as chain snatching and robbery occur. There will be 35-50 chowkies in each police station and two policemen will be deputed at each chowki. The decision regarding chowkies comes after city police introduced a new beat system, wherein each busy street in the city will have a police constable looking after it.Now, the police constable in charge of a street will have to sit at his respective chowki for 30 minutes after every beat.Mirji said the idea behind the project was to make people feel safer. For this, he said, police needed to go to the doorsteps of the people to help them but as it is not practical, they were devising new ways to get closer to the public.Even as city police plans to set up chowkies at a large scale, there are some police outposts (Saraswathi Nagar police outpost in Vijayanagar, Attiguppe Railway Parallel Road outpost in Chandra Layout and an outpost near N R Pet) that are unattended and remain locked.Although two policemen are deputed for outposts, they cannot be found there, it is said.Police cite staff shortage as the reason.
