CHENNAI: Comic book characters Archie Andrews and his gang, who celebrating their 70th birthday just a month ago, are probably the world's oldest teenagers. Chennai may have missed the cake and candles by 30 days, but who said that a musical tribute to the gang from Riverdale wouldn't make a great after party? Fans of the popular comic series may want to keep their calendars free on the 28th and 29th of this month for the 'Archie Musical' by Nicholas Productions, part of The Big Bang Festival. "This production is going to be a reunion for Archie and his friends," shares Denver Anthony Nicholas, director of the play. "We decided on soft rock to keep it fun and retro at the same time. So, audiences can look forward to songs from Billy Joel, Guns 'n' Roses, Skidrow and even Aerosmith!" he adds. And yes, The Archies, Archie's own rock band from the comic, will be making an appearance as well. Although it has been a while since some Archie enthusiasts picked up a comic, memories of under-the-table textbook reads and Betty vs Veronica quarrels are just a read away. "There used to be a time when I would go through nine or 10 comics a day," reveals Raj Sanghavi, a post-graduate student. No kidding, 'addictive' could well be Archie's middle name, freckles and all. In Dr Kandaswamy's case, Archie's antics seem to have come a full circle."Back in the day, I would go to the library when I was in school," he says. "But when I opened my clinic, I started binding some of my comic books together to keep my patients' children entertained while I attended to cavities," reminisces the 53-year-old dentist. Heads up for a shocker in the 'Archie Musical': the stage is set 12 years in the future, where Jughead Jones (Archie's best friend) is a single parent raising a daughter!(The Archie Musical will be staged at the Museum Theatre.
