CHENNAI: The expulsion of V N Sasikala, her relatives and associates from the AIADMK was on Monday hailed by party cadre at the grassroots level. Some even went to the extent of calling it a step by party chief J Jayalalithaa to increase accessibility to Poes Garden. Why celebrate? “Why not? This is a great development. That group held on to many things. No one had the guts to criticise the clique because we were not clear on the limits. But that doesn’t matter now,” Michael (name changed) told Express. While the party office was quiet, a small crowd of cadre gathered outside the Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa, which wore a festive look. “Amma is showing her real self by doing the right thing for the party and Tamil Nadu even if it means losing a friend,” said a cadre smiling broadly. “Chinna Amma was becoming a liability. Amma now has nothing to fear and there is nothing to stop her because we stand firmly behind her with no one between us,” she added.Leaders of the party either held their silence on the matter or said very little. “It is not for me to comment. The decision is right as Amma herself made it. It has set an example against clique culture. Now we are where we should be. The party is Amma and Amma is the party,” an MP told Express, on condition of anonymity. “With one bold and swift move she has cleared herself of a number of taints and has managed to shake off the albatross around her neck,” he added. Meanwhile, cadre burst crackers and distributed sweets to the public in Cuddalore and Villupuram.
