BANGALORE: After the alleged dog bite attack on a two-and-a-half-year-old boy and recurring reports for the same, the immediate focus is on the measures taken by the BBMP in tackling the problem.Dr Parvez Ahmad Piran, BBMP joint director, animal husbandry, said that he has spoken to the commissioner about the urgent need to tackle the dog menace in the city. “The solution to it is a combination of sterilisation programmes and proper waste disposal,” he said. He added that he had already asked the partner NGOs to increase the number of sterilisation programmes to 10,000 a month. Earlier the ABC program consisted of around 8,000 to 9,000 sterilisation programmes per month. He also spoke of the need to maintain garbage-free surroundings. Speaking with City Express, he urged people to indulge in proper waste disposal management. “People must not dump the waste on the roads and ensure that it is collected by the BBMP vehicles everyday,” he said.Last year, the BBMP in collaboration with a non-governmental organisations conducted 69,141 sterilisation programmes and 1,16,000 dogs were vaccinated. This year the corporation plans to conduct around one lakh sterilisation programmes. After the attack in Yelahanka, Geetha Shashikumar, corporator, Yelahanka, said that she is making sure that there is proper garbage clearance in the area. She added that the dog catchers are being sent on rounds twice a day. Citing policy constraints, she said that the corporation is doing everything within its jurisdiction to tackle the problem. She agreed that the public needs to work on their basic civic sense and dispose garbage in a proper manner.
