Kolkata: With ghosts the flavour of the season, frequenting worn-out mansions dating back to centuries to Brit-owned hill resorts in Bengali films, seasoned director Haranath Chakraborty said his new flick Chayamoy (The Shadowy)
was more a children's film where the apparitions were friendly.
Regretting there had been very few children's films, ace film maker Goutam Ghosh said "had there been more films for the tiny tots, boys and girls, that would have drawn them in droves to the auditorium."
"A film on Shirshendu (Mukhopadhyay)'s story by a director like Haranath who knows the pulse of the people!. I read the main story, an eminently readable piece of work where ghosts are not scary."
"Going by the effort he put in filming the narratives, the scripting, music, the old world, typical Bengali countryside locations. It will be something really watchable," the 'Padma Nadir Majhi' director said.
"Yes you might say Tollywood is under the spell of ghosts. But Chhayamoy is a tad different from the usual spooky stories. To make it not look dated, I had to contemporise some elements - not the content, but settings, and it also raises
social awareness," the director of 'Chalo Paltai' about the rat race doing more harm than good to children, said.
In this time of turbulence and disturbance, the audience should be treated with something light-hearted which would eventually make them feel good. Though it is essentially a movie meant for children but would attract the grown-ups as well, Chakraborty said.
Chayamoy, produced by Rose Valley films, is based on the novel of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay.
In a tribute to the music maestro and also to recreate the fantasy world of Goopey Bagha, a popular song of the sequel has been re-invented in the film, celebrated music composer Debajyoti Mishra said.
In Chayamoy one person Indraparatap lands in the village of Shimulgarh where he is caught stealing something from the house of Gagon Sapui. Everyone is interested in the bag of the thief particularly Gagon but suddenly a chaotic
situation took place and something goes haywire.
