CHENNAI: There is good news for people who live in the Adyar-Besant Nagar area. Fortis Malar Hospital has started a dedicated department for neurology. Headed by senior consultant Dr Dinesh Nayak, the department will focus on epilepsy management, including an epilepsy surgery programme. Fortis Malar Hospital now has 18 fully equipped critical beds exclusively for neuro patients. In addition, the hospital is now equipped to deal with acute stroke management, within 8 hours of the occurrence. The team incudes Dr V Satish Kumar (consultant), Dr Malcolm Jayraj (consultant) and Dr B Pal (head, dept of neuro anaesthesia).The doctors will tackle a broad spectrum of neurological conditions including Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Myasthema Graves. The department has a neuro-intensive care unit. Commenting on the recently established neurology department, Dr Dinesh Nayak said, “It is our goal to provide comprehensive neurological treatment via our highly experienced medical professionals. In our observation, we have found a social stigma attached to patients suffering from neurological diseases like epilepsy. People need to be aware that neurological conditions such as epilepsy or stroke are treatable, giving numerous patients the opportunity to lead a normal existence.”
