Mumbai: In a reprieve to noted Pakistani singer Adnan Sami, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday allowed him to travel abroad whenever he wishes to till the end of the trial against him under the FEMA.
The court while hearing an appeal filed by the singer seeking permission to travel to Dubai, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to perform shows, has directed Sami to submit two sureties of a whopping Rs 1.50 crore assuring that he would return to India and appear before the court conducting the trial.
Proceedings under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) were initiated against Sami with regard to the flats he had purchased in Mumbai.
"Make sure he (Sami) complies with the order or else he will have to give company to the people lodged in Arthur Road jail. He can perform for them then," Justice BR Gavai remarked while granting the permission.
The court accepted the argument of Sami's lawyer Vibhav Krishna that although Sami is a Pakistani, his career has potential only in India and hence he would come back.
"The organiser of the show Rajendra Lodhia and his wife Mital Lodhia will be the two sureties for Sami and would file an affidavit assuring that the singer would come back to India and face trial," Krishna said.
Apart from FEMA, Sami is also facing a domestic violence case registered against him by his estranged wife Sabah Galadari.
