Clashes erupted between Muslims and Buddhists, the two dominant communities in the region at Bodh Kharboo on Monday after some unidentified persons allegedly tore off pages of holy Quran in a mosque.

The tension spread across Ladakh. Earlier prohibitory orders were clamped in both the towns as incidents of stoning houses and establishments belonging to rival communities continued.

A defence spokesman said the civil administration, sensing trouble, sought army assistance in maintaining law and order in Leh following which five to six columns were rushed immediately to conduct a flag march.

So far the situation was under control, he added.
