KOCHI: Retired Customs Superintendent M Achutha Menon, 83, died in Kochi on Wednesday. He became famous by proving many cases related to smuggling of drugs worth crores of rupees in the 1970s and 80s.
An excellent officer during his career, Menon was selected for the Republic Day Award of the President for distinguished service in 1984. Menon was the first officer of Kochi Customs to win the President's medal. Born to Mankuzhi Krishnakurup and Mayampurathu Narayani Amma in 1927 in Thrissur, Achutha Menon started his career as a junior officer in Madras Customs in 1946. He joined Kochi Customs in 1950 and retired as a superintendent.
