New Delhi: With some of the prettiest women in the country being the face of the brand, rank newcomer and only-two-months-in-the-city, 24-year-old Amrit Maghera sure has pulled a big one. The pretty lady is officially the new face of cosmetic brand Lakme.
Wanting to know more, we called her in Mumbai: Amrit answers the phone on the first ring and her voice is fresh and heavily accented. Having grown up in UK, it’s not a surprise. However, one wonders how much time it would take her to learn Hindi.
Before she gets busy with a tight sched, Hindi classes and work, she chats with IBNLive.com.
Jhoomur Bose: How are the Hindi lessons progressing?
Amrit Maghera: Ah, the Hindi is going very well, thank you. As half my family is Indian, it is of particular interest to me. So I am not just learning to speak, but am learning to read and write it as well. Let’s see what happens!
Jhoomur Bose: So which half of the family is Indian? Tell us a little about them.
Amrit Maghera: My dad is English-Scot while my mum is Indian. We are a big family, particularly on my mum’s side where there are many uncles, aunties, cousins. My younger brother is a guitarist, while dad is an engineer and mom teaches. She used to be a dancer and model back in her days though.
Jhoomur Bose: Ah, so let’s see, you wanted to do this since you were a kid?
Amrit Maghera: Oh definitely, I love the performing arts. I used to dance on mum’s old records, joined all the drama and dance classes, I was always busy with these things in school. As I grew up, I got a formal degree in dance and drama, made it to London where I was a professional dancer. I also did some acting work here and there.

Jhoomur Bose: Singer, dancer, model, actor: A lot of interests! Any order of preference or priority?
Amrit Maghera: Not really, priorities and preferences have kept changing throughout my life. When I was in the band, the music took over and I was completely into it. Ideally though, I would like to incorporate all of it. At the moment, I am quite excited about the Lakme thing and I am letting it sink in.
Jhoomur Bose: Congratulations on that again. Now you’re two months in Mumbai, how are you managing?
Amrit Maghera: It’s been very interesting and not stressful at all. I am staying with a friend from England for now and have even managed to make a nice bunch of friends. Of course I feel homesick, but then mum is coming here soon, so that should be okay. I am looking forward to working.
Jhoomur Bose: Speaking of work, while all others seem to want ‘international acclaim’, you are going the other way: Having worked with global brands, you want to come and work in the industry here. What’s the logic?
Amrit Maghera: See, I am 24, I don’t have any commitments, I am not married, there are no children. This is the stage where I can go and uproot myself and take off to another country and start again. I wanted to do something different; something exciting and I wanted to learn more about myself. Believe me, it makes more sense each day.
So while this impulsive Aries has taken the plunge and seems to be making the right moves for now, we wish her luck. The Ladies of Lakme have been known to be of a different mettle, let’s see what the days bring us from Maghera.
