CHENNAI: While there has been a minor decrease in the number of Indian students studying in USA between 2010-2011, this does not necessarily mean a dip in interest. Given that Indian sends the second largest number of students to the US, universities there are interested in marketing themselves in India, Mark W Harris, President ELS Educational Services, said here on Wednesday.Speaking on the sidelines of a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony with four educational institutions in Tamil Nadu, he said that there was a trend of more UG enquiries by Indian students, which suggested that economic prosperity was improving aspirations.“Over the years, Indian students have come to the US to pursue Postgraduate and Doctoral studies. Now, more students enquire about UG courses and universities there and are interested in taking advantage of this trend,” he said, adding that one of the reasons ELS has set up a shop in India was this interest by the institutions. However, this interest will take time to translate into numbers, he said. The MoU, he said, would provide students information about the various educational opportunities in USA. “We are different from other consultants as we provide the service free of cost and use scientific methods to give unbiased advice to aspirants,” he said. Information Officer at the US Consulate-General, Anand Krishna said that the dip in the number of Indian students in America does not represent a dip in fresh students who travel from here. “While the open door report of the Institute of International Education suggests a decrease of 1000 Indian students between October 2010 and September 2011, there has been a great increase in student visa applications of about 14 per cent,” he said. The organisations that signed the MoU on Wednesday were SRM University, Gateway International School, GRD College, Coimbatore and PSG college of Arts and Science, Coimbatore.
