After a hot chase that lasted for over 10 kilometres, the Vellore police nabbed an eight-member gang near Pusarivalasai Village on Tuesday night. Police said that the gang was allegedly involved in the murder of DMDK functionary, A Soundar (32), in Villupuram district recently. Besides, they also had several other murder and robbery cases pending against them in Vellore.
The long chase on the deserted Panamadangi-Paratharami Road along the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border began after the Vellore police received a tip off from top officials of the department that gang involved in Soundar’s murder was seen moving around in a Sports Utility Vehicle bearing the registration number TN 47 M 5599.
After receiving the information, Vellore Superintendent of Police I Eswaran directed Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Katpadi, V Mathivanan, and a special team to nab the gang immediately.
The SP also alerted the police stations in and around Katpadi Station and the check posts to remain vigilant to intercept the culprits and prevent them from entering Chittoor District in Andhra Pradesh.
The team led by Katpadi DSP spotted the car parked near a petty shop in Panamadangi around 7.30 pm and tried to surround them.
However, the criminals sensed the presence of police and sped away in the car. The police team chased them down near Pusarivalasai village where the miscreants, realising that they were being outrun, abandoned the car and ran helter skelter into the forest.
However, the police team surrounded them and arrested eight persons, identified as Siva alias Sivakumar (28), Saravana Kumar (36), Prasad (24) and Rajesh of Vellore, Deva alias Arumugam (30), Srinivasan (23), Appu alias Murugan (24) and Mohammed Illiyas (24) of Villupuram. The car was being driven by Illiyas. The police have confiscated the car in which they tried to escape, said a police officer.
After the initial interrogation, it was found out that Deva and the three others had come to Vellore district to take asylum in Sivakumar’s house near Panamadangi to evade police arrest in connection with the murder of Soundar.
Deva and his associates had barged into Soundar’s house at Panampattu in Villupuram district and hacked him on Monday.
“Sivakumar, who was the prime accused in five murder cases, and Deva have been operating like an inter-district gang. They were involved in several murder and dacoity cases. Deva had come to Sivakumar’s house to take refuge,” said a senior police officer and added that they had handed over Deva, Appu, Illiyas and Srinivasan to the Villupuram district police and that the accused had been taken to Villupuram during the early hours of Wednesday.
The police officer further added said that they had arrested Sivakumar and three of his associates for plotting a heist. “We are enquiring with Sivakumar and his associates to find out whether they had also been involved in any other cases in the district,” added the police officer further.
