BANGALORE: Just a few hundred metres away from the Chief Minister’s house lies a heap of neglected garbage in the Ganganagar locality of North Bangalore. The D Rajgopal Road links Ganganagar to Mekhri Circle. At the end of this road lies a Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) power station. In an empty spot towards the left of this power station lies the garbage dump of approximately 29,000 residents of the ward. Coconut shells are thrown all over the site. A pack of stray dogs rummage through the dumpsite for food. A horde of mosquitoes and flies swarm around the dump. Rat holes are a common site in the area. The foul odour emanating from the garbage is unbearable. The jeopardy, that conditions such as these might put the residents in , needs to be realised by the authorities.Shyama, a resident of the area, said, “The site has been like this from the past few years. We have tried complaining to the authorities but they tell us that they do not have any other place to dispose the garbage.” The pedestrians due to the heavy traffic flow in the region crossing the road can be quite an adventure. A pedestrian on the road, Karthik A, voiced his problems. He said, “If they were to clear out the garbage, crossing the road would be an easier task. Sometimes we need to wait ten minutes before we get a chance to navigate through the road.” Upon inspection of the site, City Express observed that many people used it as an urinal ground adding to the stench of the place. “The corporator of the area, V.Anand , speaking to City Express said, “The problem is with the garbage collection authorities and not with us. It is a problem we see not only here in this area but that we see everywhere in Bangalore. There have been no tenders from the past 5 years. We are thinking of widening the road which may solve the problem. “He also added that he would ensure that the area would be cleared of garbage by tomorrow afternoon.Upon contacting the head of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) of the BBMP, he said it could be more informative to contact the zonal officer. The zonal health officer for the area, Prabhakar said, “We clean it up every morning at around 10 am. Residents of other ward areas and from hotels dump the garbage here and hence it gives an impression that we are not doing our duty.”
