The State Government will never allow GM seeds or the use of endosulfan in the state, said Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan. He was presiding over the inaugural session of the two-day national seminar on organic farming intended to make Kasargod an organic village.
“Health security is what the government is aiming, through food security,” said K P Mohanan. He said that both Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Finance Minister K M Mani would be the pillars of strength for the agricultural sector in the state.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that his government had realised that the economic growth of Kerala was possible only through the development of the agricultural sector and the government was functioning on the basis of this truth.
“Along with attracting the younger generation to agriculture and encouraging organic farming, the marketing also needs to be strengthened,” said Chandy.
Oommen Chandy said that the efforts made by the Sikkim Government to make Sikkim a organic farming state should be lesson for Kerala too.
Sikkim Agriculture Director Khorlo Bhutia handed over the copies of the book ‘Sikkim Towards Fully Organic’ to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan. In the inaugural session of the seminar, Agriculture secretary K R Jyothilal IAS, Agriculture Director R Ajithkumar, Planning Board Chief of agriculture Dr P Rajasekharan, agricultural scientists, Agriculture Department officials, model organic farmers and service providers of organic certification also spoke.
