Hisar: The Jat stir was called off on Sunday after the protesters reached a compromise with the Haryana government late on Saturday night, with the latter assuring the release of its leaders arrested during the three-week agitation in Hisar over their demand for reservation in government jobs under the OBC quota.
The compromise was reached following marathon talks late on Saturday night between the two sides.
Dharamveer, along with Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's OSD MS Chopra and former Hisar MP Jai Parkash, held talks with the Jats in a bid to resolve the deadlock.
He said Jats had also been assured that Haryana government would forward the recommendation of the state backward class commission's report on reservation for Jats to the Centre as soon as it receives the same.
The Jats, who virtually laid a seige in the district and blocked several roads for three weeks, have now agreed to call off their stir. One person who was killed in police firing on Saturday will be cremated today.
One of the protesters, Jeetu, said, "We were demanding the release of all those who were arrested during the agitation. The government has agreed to release them from custody. Whenever they come out, we will first organise a funeral ceremony for one of our men who got killed durng the movement. We will have a core group meet after that to decide on our future strategy."
