Domestic help Lakshmi (28), who was standing near the Light House a little before noon on Thursday, watched in horror as a man came under an MTC bus near Light House on Thursday. The accident killed Thulasi (50) and left four injured.
A resident of Mylapore, she was trying to cross the road along with her neighbour to get to work to a nearly house around 11.30 am when she saw a speeding MTC bus approaching from Santhome towards the beach. In a flash, the bus moved out of its lane to its right and collided head on with three two-wheelers that were proceeding towards Santhome.
“It all happened in just a few seconds. I don’t know clearly who all were riding the bikes. The accident happened because the bus was overspeeding and the driver swerved the vehicle to the right and stopped before hitting a pavement. Some of onlookers rushed along with the police to rescue two youngsters and a woman,” she recalled.
She claimed that they could not pull out a man, who was later identified as Thulasi (50), from under the MTC bus as his crushed head was stuck under its tyre. “I could see his limbs moving under the bus as he struggled for life. The shaking later stopped. I was almost in tears and found I myself helpless,” said a shocked Lakshmi.
She claimed that the police chased the crowding public away even as they attempted to help the injured. “I was there for at least half-an-hour. Till the police shooed us away, they did not pull the man out,” she said.
