HYDERABAD: Superstition and cruelty led to a stray dog being beaten to death by residents of Vorla Sankaramma Colony at Kapra on Monday.Irritated by cries of the dog after being mauled by other street dogs in a fight, few residents decided to get rid of the dog by beating it to death. It was reportedly a friendly stray and had not bitten anyone so far.“After it was injured, colony members felt the cries of the animal will bring them bad omen and they beat it over a few days till it succumbed to injuries,” said a resident, who did not wish to be named. After being badly injured, the dog was taken care by Tirupatamma, who works as a domestic help in the locality and her husband Sambaiah before it died.“Other stray dogs have been beaten up by residents here before. This one was particularly playful and though it barked at strangers, it never bit anyone,” said Supriya Aysola, a resident. She added the cries of the dog irked some residents and they decided to get rid of it. According to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, it is a crime to beat any animal with an intent to kill it.“The witnesses can lodge an FIR at the local police station for prompt action against offenders. A copy of the report can also be sent to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for sensitisation programmes by SPCA volunteers,” said Swami Swayam Bhagwan Das, vice-president of SPCA, a body under the Animal Welfare Board of India. However, none of the residents admitted to have seen the dog being beaten up.
