Hyderabad: In a bid to get the measure of the real pulse of the people of Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy has embarked on a six-month Praja Sankalp Padyatra ahead of crucial 2019 Assembly elections and is also preparing his party's manifesto from the ground.
Women, youth, farmers, elderly citizens, people from all sections of society are meeting Jagan with their demands while he is on touring the state.
In the last one month, Jagan has traveled across 12 Assembly constituencies, covering a distance of 383 kilometers. During his 3000-km long Padyatra, Jagan plans to tour nearly 125 constituencies.
According to a party source, "For the upcoming 2019 elections, YSRCP manifesto would be simple and centric on real public issue, unlike the hefty TDP manifesto which lost its meaning after Chandrababu Naidu coming to power."
In 2014 elections, the promise of waiving farm loans by the Telugu Desam Party proved to be a big hit with the public, and was seen as one of the key reasons for Chandrababu Naidu becoming the Chief Minister of newly bifurcated state of Andhra Pradesh.
Ahead of 2019 elections, hoping to become the next chief minister, YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced series of promises for farmers, if elected to power.
Announcing insurance cover and declaring MSP in advance, Jagan promised that Rs 12,500 would be given to farmers before sowing season. He also promised to set up Market Stabilisation Fund with Rs 3,000 crore to check market fluctuations.
Dubbing the Chandrababu Naidu government as anti-farmer, Jagan Mohan Reddy said: "My government would give priority to farmers and their welfare. I have visited the houses of nearly 65 families, which had witnessed farmer suicide and the State government must have provided insurance to 10 or 15 families and the amount was adjusted to the loans due to the banks and the difference of amount was given to the families.
We have to do away with such practices and YSR Beema will be given to the family members in the eventuality of death and the amount of Rs 5 lakh would be credited to the bank account of the next kin of the farmer."
With large number of women supporters participating in Padyatya, Jagan is wooing the women vote bank with many promises. Jagan Reddy announced to give Rs 20,000 per year to mothers of college-going children and Rs 15,000 to mothers of school-going children to take care of all the expenditure.
He has also promised to end liquor menace in Andhra Pradesh.
Reaching out to all sections of society, Jagan Reddy even announced series of measures for Schedules Caste and Schedule Tribes. He has promised to provide free power to SC and ST houses, hiking the pension amount up to Rs 3,000, filling up 1.40 lakh vacancies and to take up housing on a massive scale to ensure that no one is left out.
During the Padyatra, various teachers associations met Jagan Mohan Reddy and urged him to regularise contract employees once he comes to power. Jagan Reddy assured them of looking into the issue on priority, if elected.
Jagan even extended his support to the students of Fathima Institute of Medical Sciences, who are facing a bleak future after their college was derecognised.
Jagan's Padyatra and his effort at bringing about a change with peoples manifesto is sure generating interest but will it prove to be the game changer for him, only time will tell.
