Karnataka duty-bound to give water: CPM

Terming Karnataka’s refusal to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as a threat to the federal structure of the country, the State unit of the CPM on Monday demanded that the Centre intervene in the matter to get Tamil Nadu its rightful share of water.

State secretary G Ramakrishnan said even if it was true that Karnataka was facing a drought situation, it was duty bound to apportion and release the rightful share of water to TN. This was exactly the point stressed by both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the recent Cauvery River Authority(CRA) meeting, he observed.

“Rejecting this argument, Karnataka has said it would not release water to TN,” Ramakrishnan recalled and added that it was condemnable that External Affairs Minister S M Krishna supported Karnataka’s stand, contradicting the views of the Centre.

With the water in Mettur dam fast depleting, the only way to save the crops in over 14 lakh acre is to release water from Karnataka. The Centre must decisively intervene, he said and added that the TN government should approach the Supreme Court immediately and undertake all necessary measures to get Cauvery water.
