Lt Gen Kapoor is Army vice chief
Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor took over as the Vice Chief of Army Staff at the Army HQ on January 1.

New Delhi: Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor, who took over as the Vice Chief of Army Staff at the Army HQ on January 1, was on Tuesday accorded a Guard of Honour at South Block.

Earlier in the day, he laid a floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate as a tribute to the martyrs.

Lt Gen Kapoor has taken over as the vice chief from Lt Gen S Pattabhiraman, who has retired. He likely to become the next army chief when Gen J J Singh retires in September-end.

Lt Gen Kapoor was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery on June 11, 1967. He is an alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and has done the Higher Command and National Defence College courses.

He has also represented the country as the Chief Operations Officer for all United Nations Forces deployed in Somalia from 1994 to 1995, for which, he was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in January 1996.

During his service as a Brigade Commander deployed on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, the General was awarded Sena Medal in January 1998. He is also a recipient of the Ati Vishist Seva Medal.

The General had also taken active part in 1971 Operations launched for the Liberation of Bangladesh.
