In a remarkable act of humanity, a private bus turned into an ambulance when a student onboard showcased the signs of a heart attack in Mangaluru on July 30. They reportedly covered six kilometres in six minutes to reach the hospital. The private bus was travelling on route no 13 from Kunjathbail to Mangaladevi temple. A man named Gajendra Kundar was driving, while another named Mahesh Poojary was the conductor. They were joined by Suresh, another driver who was supposed to take over the responsibility of driving from Kundar was also on the bus. Around 3 pm, approx 10-15 students from Yenepoya University boarded the bus at Kuloor. When the bus reached Kottara Chowki, one student – a girl seated near the front door – complained of chest pain. Even as her college mates were attending to her, Mr Kundar, Mr Poojary and Mr Suresh decided to take the bus to a nearby hospital.
Ganjendra Kumar didn’t lose his wits and put on the siren sign on the bus to reach the hospital. Mr Kundar took the bus to Father Muller Medical College Hospital at Kankanady within six minutes disbarring any stoppages. The bus stopped outside the Casualty block crossing the safety guidelines. The staff shifted the student inside the hospital. Due to the swift action of the bus driver, the student was able to get timely treatment. The video of the incident is now circulating on the internet. Dakshina Kannada Bus Operators’ Association President Azia Parthapady lauded the three crew members of the private bus for their quick response to the emergency, and for ensuring timely treatment for the student.
Driving at high speed can be considered dangerous, but this time the swift response of the driver saved the life of a college student. The wit to ensure that traffic decimates with the siren sign showcases the responsible nature of the bus driver.
