Jammu: A 65-year-old man in a village in Jammu and Kashmir bled to death and dozens more are possibly facing disability for life after suspected Islamic militants chopped off their noses and tongues in one of the region's most brutal attacks in recent months.
Nearly 13 families in the Donga Neoch village were rounded up and attacked by the rebels on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses said the heavily armed terrorists, who wore traditional Kashmiri long shirts and baggy trousers, barged into their homes, dragging even the women to a bigger house, where they first beat them with sticks before slicing them with knives.
The rebels accused the victims of being informers of the police and termed the act as revenge for the killing of a cadre by the Army on the outskirts of the village earlier this month.
The injured, which included four women, seethed in pain for nearly 12 hours before the children of the village contacted the Army, which immediately brought the villagers to a hospital and took over the entire region.
"At around 9 pm, the rebels entered their homes and took them to another large house where they attacked them all. Some people's tongues and noses were slashed. One man died on the spot. The rebels then set afire to their homes and livestock. The cattle and the goats were burnt alive," said Block Officer Safdar Ali.
The news of the gruesome attack has spread like wildfire and the area is terror struck, Ali added.
The attack is the latest in a spate of rebel violence in Kashmir, where at least nine people have been killed in a fortnight.
