Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address thousands of Indian Americans at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York during his US visit in September, the event's organisers on Sunday said.

In a statement, the Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP) announced the launch of a massive nationwide mobilisation campaign to give a historic reception to Modi. The event has been named "Pradhan Mantri, Ma Narendra Modi Abhinandan Samaroh".

Vijay Jolly, BJP Global Convener of Overseas Affairs, along with Chandrakant Patel, OFBJP-USA president, according to a media statement, would tour several cities across the country to mobilise Indian American community leaders and the Indian diaspora for this event.

Jolly will meet business leaders, lawmakers, and think tanks in preparation for the community event, OFBJP said. Patel along with OFBJP team of past presidents and office-bearers is facilitating a 12-day tour for smooth preparations leading up to the event on September 28, the media statement said.

Patel will present a report describing various issues faced by the Indian diaspora in the US to Modi, it said. Madison Square Garden is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, which can accommodate 20,000 people.

Given Modi's immense popularity among Indian Americans, the venue, according to organisers is considered to be too small to accommodate his large fan club.

However, the organisers, the (OFBJP), who were initially looking for venues that can accommodate between 60,000 to 80,000 people; signed the contract for the Madison Square Garden this week, as this was the only large venue available for September 28.
