Pune: A mother-daughter duo from Mumbai have been sentenced to death by a fast-track court for the murder of a Pune doctor.
Leena and Deepti Deosthale, the two accused in the Dr Deepak Mahajan murder case, were pronounced guilty by a fast-track court in Pune, which gave the verdict in just one-and-a-half year.
The case dates back to last year when Dr Mahajan — a doctor with the YCM Hospital — had been sedated, abducted and murdered by the mother-daughter duo on July 2, 2006.
They later hacked his body into pieces and dumped the body parts in secluded areas of Katraj ghat and the Nashik Road area.
Deepak Mahajan's wife, Smita, expressed her gratitude to the police who "worked so hard to find the evidence and give justice."
"There is nothing I can say. Nobody can fill the loss," said Smita.
The prosecution examined 47 witnesses and the police seized 200 articles of evidence in the case, of which 181 were from the duo’s residence where they had committed the brutal act.
Calling the case rarest of the rare, prosecution lawyer Ujjawala Pawar said, "After giving injection to the doctor, they (Deepti and Leena) then had cut his body parts and had dumped them in different areas in polythene bags. The act was brutal. The modus operandi is that one of the ladies, Leena, was an advocate and Deepti was a medical student."
46 witnesses have been examined.
A polygraph test had also been carried out on the accused, which found that the daughter, Leena, had lied during the test.
The accused, who hail from Mumbai, had adamantly refused to engage the services of a lawyer and were arguing their own case. They also cross-examined the witnesses themselves.
