KOCHI:  The National Immunization programme, aimed at the identification and immunisation of infants, who are not or partially immunised, will come to an end here on Wednesday. The district-level programme will be held at the Edavanakad Primary Health Centre. Based on the progress made in the programme in the month, the public health workers and government hospitals will be submitting their reports on immunisation coverage to the district National Rural Health Mission (NHRM) office. “The immunisation efforts in the state went in to a slump for a few years owing to which states like Tamil Nadu have now progressed above ours. A few cases of vaccine-preventable diseases have have also been reported from certain districts like Palakkad and Malappuram. This is a cause of concern,” District Education and Media Manager Dr G Sreekala,  who is in charge of the programme in the district, said. “Last month, we asked the ASHA workers to identify such cases of diseases. Our focus within the Corporation is on floating or non-resident population. Twenty-three Junior Public Health Nurses and two supervisors, one each in Edappally and Pallathuruthy, have been appointed to carry out the immunisation process to those in need among the floating population, “ Sreekala said. The programmes are being undertaken in every block under the NRHM. “Each panchayat has been carrying out campaigns specific to their area. They have been given broad guidelines under which action plans have been prepared. Apart from immunisation drives, awareness classes, rallies, quiz programmes, etc, are being conducted,” Distict NRHM Officer Dr KV Beena said.
