Here are some important reports from the biggest newspapers of India:
1.) Funding a dignified send-off for Northeast locals
Every year, thousands from the northeast come to the Capital in the hope of turning breadwinner for their families thousands of kilometres away in the hills. But some of them don’t return. Not even in death. For weeks after their death, many bodies are kept in a mortuary while authorities try to contact the families. But the families in many a case, crunched by penury, say they can’t transport it back.
With such instances on the rise, the ministry of home affairs for the first time last week granted an initial sum of Rs 5 lakh for the Delhi Police North East Unit. The unit’s nodal officer will disperse the money for the final rites of economically deprived NE residents in the capital, The Hindustan Times reports.
2.) Let down by 'vaastu', man drags firm to consumer forum in Karnataka
In a curious case, a resident of Vijayapura in Karnataka has dragged a ‘vaastu' consultation firm to the District Consumer Forum, saying his life did not witness the promised changes after he made "architectural corrections" at his house as suggested.
Based on his complaint, the Consumer Forum has ordered issuance of notice to 'Sarala Vastu' being run by Chandrashekhar Guruji.
Mahadev Dudihal, working in a legal firm, in the petition, said he had spent lakhs of rupees and was facing financial and domestic problems since 2007, the Hindu reported.
3.) British PM Cameron invites Sri Sri to address House of Commons
The Art of Living’s World Culture Festival ended on Sunday with a number of colourful performances, entertaining nearly three lakh people from India and abroad, The Hindustan Times reports. Along with the international dignitaries came an invitation from British Prime Minister David Cameron. The British PM sent his invitation in a message through his Conservative Party’ s parliamentarian Matthew Offord.
“British Prime Minister David Cameron has invited you to address the House of Commons whenever you visit the UK next time,” Offord said. “People say that no one can change the world but Sri Sri has already started,” Cameron was quoted as saying in his message to the spiritual leader.
4.) In last 2 years, Muslims got only 2% of 6 PSBs' priority sector loans: RTI
If there were any doubts about low lending by banks to Muslims -one of the reasons for the community's financial exclusion -an RTI disclosure conclusively lays them to rest, The Times of India reports.
Answers received through Right To Information applications to half-adozen banks by Mumbai-based activist M A Khalid show that of all priority sector loans, Muslims got a little over 2% in both 2014-15 and till September 30 in 201516. The revelation may strengthen the feeling within the community that it is getting further marginalised under the NDA dispensation.
5.) Yamuna banks in NCR already a disaster zone
Large parts of the Yamuna riverbed along Noida, Greater Noida and some portions in Delhi have been encroached by land sharks and converted into real estate -flats, farmhouses, bungalows, cottages. As the controversy rages on the alleged degradation of the Yamuna riverbed by the Art of Living Foundation's World Culture Festival, Times of India traversed areas along the river and found large-scale transgressions across several kilometres, violations that would not have been possible without the complicity of local police and other government agencies.
Besides, getting plots in the area registered with the UP stamp and registration department is a cinch, and land dealers make merry, impressing buyers to sell flats and farmhouses on encroached land, especially along the Noida-Greater Noida Express way.
6.) With 44% of population employed, Tirupur in Tamil Nadu best for jobseekers
With 44% of its population reported as 'main workers', that is, regularly employed, Tirupur in Tamil Nadu tops the employment table among 506 cities and towns. It is one of the biggest textile and hosiery centres of India. Others in the top five include Santipur in West Bengal and Erode and Rajapalyam in Tamil Nadu, all textile manufacturing hubs.
The New Delhi area with its high proportion of government employees, and Bengaluru, a mix of old and new economy , are joint fourth with Mangalagiri in Andhra Pradesh, with 40% of their populations working regularly, The Times of India reports.
7.) Still scarred, Jhajjar bank guard who fought off rioters doesn't want to return
Hawa Singh Yadav lies on a cot in a dimly lit room, staring straight up at the ceiling, a blank expression on his face. Visitors still keep milling around the bank guard who didn't give up his post while under attack during the recent Jat agitation in Haryana, saving an estimated Rs 100 crore in cash and valuables, but the 53-year-old admits he is "tired".
Around 4 km away, in Jhajjar city, the SBI Patiala branch that was witness to the madness of that February 20 evening is desolate. A cash-dispensing machine lies charred and upturned inside the ATM, while burnt wooden planks and broken furniture are strewn outside.
The mob came around 5 pm, when Yadav was the lone guard on duty. While the branch has a staff of 12-13, it had been shut for two days due to the Jat stir. Police say around 500 men attacked the branch. Yadav puts the number at 1,000-1,500, as per the Indian Express report.
8.) Wanted for riot murder, J&K BJP leader surfaces at MoS, PMO, house
Wanted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police for a murder during the 2013 communal clashes in Kishtwar, and declared an absconder by court, a BJP leader from Paddar surfaced at the official Delhi residence of Minister of State in the PMO Dr Jitendra Singh on Friday. In a photograph taken at the meeting, Hari Krishan alias Kasooru can be seen with Singh and sitting BJP MLAs of Kishtwar, Doda and Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to the Indian Express, Kasooru and nine others are accused of murdering 52-year-old Lassa Khandey during communal clashes in Kishtwar around Eid in 2013. Khandey was accompanying his injured son and brother in an ambulance to Gulabgarh, from where they were to be airlifted to the Udhampur Military Hospital. A mob had attacked the ambulance en route and abducted Khandey. His body was found by police next day.
9.) Well-dressed thief drives off in SUV from service centre
A 63-year-old Andheri resident, Rekhraj Jain, received the shock of his life on Friday when he went to collect his SUV from an authorised Maruti Suzuki service centre at Kalina, Santacruz ( east). Jain was informed that his car had been stolen. A scrutiny of CCTV footage by officials from Vakola police station, where a complaint was registered on Saturday, showed a man driving away with Jain’s car. The accused appeared to be talking on the phone while entering the parking lot before stealing the SUV.
In his complaint, Vijay Hate ( 35), HR manager of the centre, told the police that Jain gave his white Ertiga ( MH 02 CW 3474) for servicing on March 3 and was to collect it on Friday. Hate added that the car was parked inside the workshop after servicing and its keys were kept in the security guard’s cabin, The Mid-Day reports.
10.) Law Ministry redflags liability issues in Rafale deal
The multi-billion dollar deal for purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France has run into legal issues. Despite claims to the contrary by government functionaries, including Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, even the preliminary agreement is not a done deal, official documents accessed by The Indian Express show.
While pricing continues to be a bone of contention, Indian officials have also raised questions over key clauses, including liability of Paris in case of any shortfall in implementation of the deal, being heavily loaded in favour of the French, the Indian Express reported.
