THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The spirit and charm of Kerala’s biggest festival came alive in New Jersey as Malayalis celebrated Onam with grandeur and fervour. Seventy people got together at the Community Place in Warren, New Jersey for the day-long festivities. The event organised by NJ Malayalis commenced with the making of ‘Athapookkalam’, proceeded to a sumptuous Onasadya followed by cultural extravaganza which enthralled the gathering. The expatriate group kept up the opulent tradition of Onam, performing Thiruvathirakali, singing “Maaveli naadu vaneedum kalam...” and engaging in Onam games. Malayalam film songs, skit and dance performances were also presented.“It was remarkable to witness so many families enthusiastically coming forward and rejoicing in Onam celebrations. The festival has become a true symbol of virtue and oneness among Keralites across the globe, breaking barriers of religion and caste”, said Prof M P Lalitha Bai, who delivered the keynote address at the event. According to Arun Nittukandi, the members of NJ Malayalis are committed to make Onam a memorable get-together of the Kerala community in and around central New Jersey. Every year, the celebration provides an opportunity for our children to know and learn about the culture and traditions of Kerala. It is also an occasion to meet and bond with new Malayalis in the region.
